This ornament or paper weight is of the Hihi or stitchbird. I also have fabric with the
stitchbird on it in cream or black.
I have three colourways.
Hihi or stitchbird is a New Zealand native bird found on Little Barrier, Tiritiri Matangi and Kapiti Islands. Known to hover like great bees or humming birds in front of blossoms. Often when the sunlight falls on the rich gold of their wings or the deep blacks and pure whites of the head and neck, the males can look like a huge butterfly.
They are cavity nesters - a characteristic that has made them particularly vulnerable to predators. The hihi build their nests and conceal their eggs in the moss of the puriri tree.
On the front of this Hihi ornament is a Kirituhi which is the Maori name given to Maori-inspired tattoos that feature Maori motifs but do not include historical cultural meanings.
The ornament is 5" long and 3" high. It comes in a clear acetate box.
